SHENZHEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Public School Jobs Overview (Shenzhen)

PictureHappy Public School Teachers in Suzhou
REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Native Speaker from USA/UK/CAN/AU/NZ/IRE/S. Africa, under 60 years old
  2. Bachelor Degree or higher (authenticated at the Chinese consulate)
  3. Either 2 years of Formal Teaching Experience or 120 Hour TEFL/TESOL, CELTA or a Teaching Certificate (notarized)
  4. Clean Criminal Background Check (authenticated at the Chinese consulate)

Teaching hours:
Contracted max of 18 or 20 classes a week, but most of our Teach ESL China teachers have 12 to 15 x 40-45 minute lessons they teach each week. Some teachers have 7-10 classes a week!!! Can you imagine!?!?

Working hours:
A maximum of 8:30am to 4:30pm, weekdays only - BUT you also get a 2 hour lunch break each day!

Office hours:
Some teachers have to stay, some do not. It depends on the school, the director, your relationship with them, etc. The key is showing you’re completely confident and prepared for lessons, and then slowly ask to not have to come in for the morning, if you don't start teaching until 2pm, for example.

Vacation time:
  • 2 months of time off in the summer (Rate of pay varies by company)
  • PLUS, all national holidays during the year, which for public schools is even more than other sectors! 4 day weekends and week-long breaks can happen!
  • Depending on your start date, you can also get a full month of (partially) paid vacation over Lunar New Years (Chinese Festival, they call it, for some reason)

Lessons:
You'll usually only plan 2 or 3 different lessons to use with all of your classes during the week. You create your lessons, which allows excellent freedom. Most schools will provide you with outlines and topics, etc.

Flights:
Flight allowance of 5000 RMB - paid at the beginning or end of the contract

Housing:
You will encounter 3 different options:
  • Free housing in a studio apartment in the school.
  • Free shared housing with another teacher, outside the school, 2 bedroom apartment, etc.
  • Housing allowance of 3,000 RMB a month in Tier 1 cities, and 2,000 RMB in Tier 2 cities

Salary:
10,000-13,000 RMB/month – depending on your degree major and level of experience
A bit less for Tier 2 cities, but then your living expenses can also be 40% less in these cities.

Bonus:
They have an extension bonus between contracts, equal to 1 month's pay

Couples:
Public schools in Shenzhen are very open to hiring couples

China visa team:
Knowledgeable and helpful visa advisors will be on hand to guide you through the extensive China visa process.

Support once you land:
Your personal "Case Handler" in China will help you with setting up things such as a cell phone or SM card, internet, bank account, government documents, transportation to school, etc.

Additional benefits:
Meals: Breakfasts and Lunches provided by some schools
Chinese Lessons: Provided once a week for beginner and intermediate classes
Professional Development: Training once a month

We have interviewed 3 public school teachers in Shenzhen this year. Please watch the videos below for 3 very personal experiences.
Gabby is an American female who recently finished her contract with a public school in Shenzhen. This was her first time living or teaching abroad, and now she is making Teaching her lifelong profession by returning to school in Florida!
Jason spent two years teaching in South Korea through Teach ESL Korea, before arriving in Shenzhen. He enjoys life in Shenzhen and has joined the Teach ESL China team to help others have the same great experience.
Greg has also spent two years teaching in South Korea through Teach ESL Korea and is now teaching at a public school in Shenzhen.
